How to thin out your wig

How to thin out your wig

You’ve ordered a brand new wig and you’re excited to put it on. However, you notice there is a lot more hair density than you originally ordered. This isn’t too uncommon as depending on where you order from, some hair system manufacturers tend to add a little more hair.

However, this can look unnatural and can also cause discomfort which is why some human hair wig wearers have to thin out their wigs so that it suits them. So how do you thin a wig out? Read on below to learn more about the process.

Can I thin out a wig by myself?

The simple answer is yes. While you always have the option of going to a professional if you don’t want to take a risk, thinning a wig out — whether it’s a lace front wig, full lace wig, mono top wig or any other kind — is not that complex either and if you have experience with wigs or are confident in your abilities, you can definitely go ahead with this.

All you will need is a pair of thinning scissors. Do note that regular scissors will not work for this as thinning scissors employ a completely different technique that involves trimming only parts of the hair. Additionally, one side of the blade on a pair of thinning scissors is usually comprised of small, fine teeth to provide a sharper cut.

Steps to thinning out your wig

#1 Decide where you want to thin out your wig

Before you start, consider how much of your wig you want to thin out. Sometimes, people want to thin out the full wig. Other times, people tend to only thin out the ends to make their wigs look more natural.

#2 Place your wig on a stand and separate the parts you want to trim

Place your wig on a wig stand or somewhere stable. Use hairpins to pin it down if needed. For whichever part you want to work on trimming, separate it from the rest with hair clips or ties. Make sure to trim one section of hair at a time.

#3 Start trimming

If you’re only thinning out certain parts, have them separated and make a few small cuts starting from the top. Keep the fine teeth side of the scissors on the bottom when doing this. After this is done, use a comb to brush the trimmed hair off. The length of your hair should remain the same, but the weight and thickness should be reduced now.

If you decide to thin out the full wig, you will want to trim close to the root. Be careful though, as cutting too close to the root, you’ll find short, stubby hairs that stick out which is not a good look. Repeat the above steps.

#4 Regularly check progress

Repeat Step 3 until you’re satisfied with the thinness of your wig but make sure to regularly check your progress as you do it. Try the wig on periodically, assess how the hair density looks and make sure you aren’t cutting off too much hair. The worst thing you can do is overcut because that hair isn’t coming back.

Congratulations. You have now thinned out your wig all by yourself!
