When should you get a thin skin hair system?

If you’re planning on getting a hair system, you’ve already made significant progress as you’re just about to start your new journey with a full head of hair. But with that said, there are many types of wigs for men with different base materials and combinations. One of the most popular types of hair systems for men are thin skin hair replacement systems. What are they and are they right for you? This blog post will look at just that.

What are skin base hairpieces?

Skin base hair systems use polyurethane (poly) as the base material and are one of the most popular and widely-used hairpieces in the hair system community. This is because poly skin toupees are very durable as well as easy to install, easy to maintain and easy to remove. Because of this, poly is regularly used in combination with other base materials such as in lace front or monofilament hair systems. What are thin skin hairpieces?

Now that we know what a skin base model is, what about thin skin hair systems? Thin skin hairpieces are simply skin base models that are very thin when it comes to their thickness. These units can have a thickness ranging from upto 8 mils (which is 0.008 inches) while there are also ultra thin skin hair systems that can range from 2-3 mils such as the M101 or HD111 which are some of the thinnest skin bases available on the market.

What are the pros and cons of thin skin hair systems?

As they are extremely thin, thin skin hair systems contribute to a realistic and extremely natural look for the wearer. And as aforementioned, they are very easy to install, maintain and remove, making them an ideal choice especially for beginners.

The downside, however, is because they are so thin, they are not as durable as other kinds of hair systems. Ultra thin skin systems in particular only last four to six weeks in general. They can last a bit longer, but that’s assuming the wearer is maintaining them well and taking the right precautions.

One of them is not brushing or touching the hair when it’s wet right after a shower. Skin bases are prone to swelling and hair shedding if one does this which is why it’s important to only touch your hair when it’s dry -- even if it’s human hair.

Should you get a thin skin hair system?

If you’re just starting out, a thin skin hair system could be very ideal. Given that they last a couple of weeks, they last long enough so that you can determine whether wearing wigs for men is right for you. Because of the ease of installation, maintenance and removal, they’re also a good start and particularly ideal for those who don’t have a lot of time to spend on their hair system. Most of all, they are extremely natural looking and realistic so even if you don’t plan on wearing hair systems long term, you’ll at least look good with a full head of hair thanks to your thin skin base in the short term.

How to thin out your wig
